About
Mary Ellen Chepak LCSW-R Ph.D
Author of the new book:
"Coping Strategies to Soothe the American Heart"
As a therapist with over 40 years of experience, I wanted to provide some strategies and suggestions for coping through the political turmoil that is causing chaos in America. No matter which side of the political isle people are on, we all feel some stress. How could we not? There are unprecedented events that are occurring.
Included in the Book are some coping strategies as seen below.
-
You must watch your thoughts and what you tell yourself. In other words what you think really does matter.
-
You must empower yourself in some way. Taking charge of even simple things will have a great impact on how you feel and help you make headway to manage traumatic events.
-
Keep a Routine. Routines are grounding. They tether you to what is important to you. They validate your life and keep you centered. During trauma and grief, a routine will have a huge impact on keeping you connected to what is important to you.
-
Reach out to others. We need each other. We get strength from each other. We get support through reaching out.
-
Engage in self-care. Taking care of yourself is essential for your overall well-being, especially in difficult times. How you eat, your sleep, exercise and overall health will determine how you will be able to manage stress in your life. Therefore, it is crucial to engage in self-care, especially when undergoing stress.
-
Engage in “Play”. By engaging in fun things that we are passionate about, we can increase the odds of maintaining stable mental health during trauma. The aforementioned is given great attention in the book. But if you begin with this you are on your way. It is hoped that this book will enable the reader to engage in strategies to help one empower themselves and find a healthy way of coping in these times.
